About the event

Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker! is a deliciously irreverent reimagining of the classic ballet, infused with his signature wit, pathos, and fantastical staging. The story follows Clara, a spirited young heroine, on a bittersweet journey that begins in the bleak, Dickensian confines of Dr. Dross’ Orphanage on Christmas Eve. From there, she escapes into a shimmering, ice-skating winter wonderland and finally arrives in the exuberant candy kingdom of Sweetieland, inspired by the opulence of 1930s Hollywood musicals.

Bourne’s choreography breathes new life into Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, while Anthony Ward’s refreshed sets and costumes add a delectable visual feast. The production retains the innocence and charm of its original 1992 staging, but with a contemporary twist that makes it accessible and enchanting for audiences of all ages.

It’s a tale of growing up, first love, and the power of imagination, a perfect blend of nostalgia and novelty. If you’re exploring ways to balance tradition with innovation in your own projects, this adaptation is a masterclass in doing just that.
