A gripping tale of recovery, confession, and fragile trust, The Fifth Step explores the emotional terrain of addiction and redemption with dark humour and raw honesty.
In David Ireland’s The Fifth Step, two men meet in the shadow of addiction and the hope of recovery. James, played by Martin Freeman, is a seasoned member of Alcoholics Anonymous who takes on the role of sponsor to Luka, portrayed by Jack Lowden, a newcomer navigating the early stages of sobriety. Their bond begins over shared stories and black coffee, forming a tentative friendship rooted in mutual vulnerability.
But as Luka approaches Step Five, the pivotal moment of confession, their relationship is tested by revelations that threaten the very foundation of their trust. What begins as a support system soon spirals into a confrontation with uncomfortable truths, forcing both men to reckon with the cost of honesty and the limits of forgiveness.
Directed by Finn den Hertog and filmed live at the intimate @sohoplace in London’s West End, this provocative and subversively funny production delivers a powerful meditation on guilt, redemption, and the human need for connection.
